Revealed: Lagos bar where male sex workers hustle for clients

 The time was 7pm, penultimate Saturday. The venue was a hotel on Abaranje Road in Ikotun, a suburb in Lagos State. He adorned black denims on a black T-shirt. He said his name was Kenny, of course, he admitted it wasn’t his real name.

He sauntered into the hotel as if his main aim was to have a couple of drinks and maybe complement it with a plate of sizzling pepper soup.

Eight injured in Randburg wall collapse

Eight men were injured, six of them seriously, when a wall collapsed on them in Kowie Road, Boskruin, Randburg, on Saturday morning, paramedics said.

The cause of the accident was unclear, Netcare 911 spokeswoman Santi Steinmann said.

"Netcare 911 paramedics, its rescue unit and other services arrived at the scene and found the scene strewn with bricks and building material."

Six of the men were seriously injured and another two had moderate injuries. They were treated on scene before being taken to various hospitals for further treatment.

Emenike set to leave Fenerbahce

US appeals court says Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's trial can stay in city

A US appeals court on ruled the trial for the accused Boston Marathon bomber can go ahead in the city, over attempts from his attorneys to change the venue on the basis an impartial jury could not be seated so close to the site of the 2013 attack.

The split three-judge panel of the U.S. First Circuit Court of Appeals backed District Judge George O'Toole, who has three times rejected pleas by Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's lawyers to move the trial out of Boston, where the bombing killed three people and injured 264.

Christian group backing Buhari raises alarm over serious threats to its members

A Christian group, Northern Christian Leaders Eagle Eyes Forum, which recently endorsed the candidacy of the All Progressives Congress’ presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), has cried out that its members now live under threat as a result of the endorsement.

Sounding the alarm that its leaders’ lives were particularly under serious threat following the Forum’s endorsement of Buhari, Chairman of the Christian leaders, Pastor Aminchi Habu, who addressed journalists in Kaduna on Friday, described the tenure of President Goodluck Jonathan as a disappointment.

The federal government has clarified that while it is not in the plans of President Goodluck Jonathan to illegally remove Prof. Attahiru Jega as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, “nothing would debar the INEC boss from proceeding on retirement when the need arises, in line with the civil service rule and as enshrined in the constitution.”

Former Plateau State Governor Joshua Dariye To Face Trial

The Supreme Court has dismissed an interlocutory appeal filed by former Plateau State Governor, Senator Joshua Dariye, challenging the corruption charges leveled against him since 2007 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Mr Dariye was arraigned by the EFCC on July 13, 2007 on a 23-count charge bordering on money laundering and other corruption charges alleged to have belonged to the Plateau State Government.

Jonathan is not Nigeria's next Messiah – Popular Ibadan prophet

An Ibadan-based popular prophet, Apostle Perez Iyiola Oluyemi has affirmed that President Goodluck Jonathan is not the Messiah Nigeria needs.

The cleric, who doubles as founder of Achievers Rock Commission International and President, Africa Evangelical Council, said Nigerians should expect another “messiah” who will lead them out of their social and economic woes and not the current leader.

Police arrests Benue syndicate with 12,000 PVCs

The Benue State Police command, yesterday nabbed a syndicate with over 12,000 Permanent Voters’ Cards in the state.

This is coming barely two days after the state police command arrested four other persons in possession of over 1,000 PVCs in Makurdi.

Military receives two jets loaded with weapons

The Nigerian Military has received two Boeing 747 jets loaded with ammunition which landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Wednesday evening. 

The two jets arrived around 4pm and 6pm respectively, and had various forms of sophisticated weapons meant for war against terrorism in the North-East.

Hardrock Construction and Engineering Ltd., the firm which built the collapsed building belonging to the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), has said that construction of the building followed standard procedures. 

The Managing Director of the company, Mr Akingbola Fatiregun, said this in Lagos on Thursday while testifying before the coroner’s inquest investigating the cause of the collapse of the six-storey building. 

LASU refunds N209million school fees to students

The Lagos state government has refunded N209m to students of the Lagos state University following the reversal of school fees by Lagos State University, LASU.

At a ceremony held at the Main auditorium of the Ojo campus of the school yesterday February 26th, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Fatai Olukoga who represented Gov. Fashola, said this was the first phase in the refund exercise. He said the second phase of refund which is about N89 million will take place soon.

Police demolish kidnappers’ den in Nnewi Anambra State

The police in Anambra, on Friday demolished two bungalows used as kidnappers’ den in Azigbo, Nnewi South Local Government Area of the state. 

Mr Joseph Agugoesi, Assistant Commissioner of Police, who led the operation, commended the effective enforcement of the demolition law by Gov. Willie Obiano which had stemmed incidents of kidnapping in the state. 

US blogger hacked to death in Bangladesh capital

Police say unidentified attackers have hacked a prominent US blogger to death in Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka.

Police on Friday said that Avijit Roy, a Bangladesh-born US citizen, known for this writing against religious fundamentalism, and wife Rafida Ahmed, were attacked after a visit to a book fair at Dhaka University.

Ahmed, also a blogger, sustained severe injuries in Thursday's attack. 

Troops recover more towns in Yobe, Adamawa

The Director, Defence Information, Maj. Gen Chris Olukolade, has said that troops of the Nigerian Army have recaptured more towns from the members of the Boko Haram sect on Friday.

Olukolade said in a statement on Friday that the troops handed out a crushing defeat to the insurgents and recovered the headquarters of Gulani Local Government Area of Yobe State, Bara, and the headquarters of Madagali Local Government area, Gulag, from them in the early hours of Friday.

Ebonyi governor set to be impeached

The political tension in Ebonyi state rose on Friday after the state House of Assembly passed a motion to serve an impeachment notice on the governor of the state, Martin Elechi over allegations of corruption and gross misconduct.

The motion was approved by the Speaker of the House, Chukwuma Nwazunku, after the acting Majority Leader of the House, Francis Nwifruru, read out details of the report of an investigative panel set up to look into the allegations contained in a set of petitions to the House against the governor.

Ebola drug trial starts in Liberia

Monrovia - Liberia on Friday started a clinical trial of experimental Ebola drug ZMapp, a health official said.

About 1 000 adults and children infected with the virus are participating in the trial in two treatment centres in the capital, Monrovia, said Jerry Brown, one of the trial's principal co-ordinators.

Liberia's health department is conducting the trial with support from the United States national institute of allergy and infectious diseases.

Leonard Nimoy, Star Trek's Mr Spock, dies at 83

US actor Leonard Nimoy, who played Mr Spock in the cult sci-fi series Star Trek, has died at the age of 83 in Los Angeles, his family has said.

His son, Adam, said he died of end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on Friday morning.

Nimoy had a long career as both an actor and director.

New York Man to Celebrate 108th Birthday With Wife, 104, After 82 Years of Marriage

Duranord Veillard still does 5 to 7 push-ups a day

A Spring Valley, N.Y. man celebrates his 108th birthday on Saturday with his wife of 82 years. And on her birthday in May, she’ll turn 105.

Duranord and Jeanne Veillard were married in Haiti in 1932 and moved to the U.S. in the late ’60s. The couple raised five children and live at home with a daughter. They are grandparents to 12 and great-grandparents to 14.

USA Today reports that the birthday boy starts each day with oatmeal, fruit and a cup of tea, and ends it with fish and vegetables. He is apparently still able to do five to seven push-ups daily.

Somali pirates free Thai fishermen held for four years

Four Thai nationals seized from a fishing vessel by Somali pirates nearly five years ago have been released, the UN and local officials have said.

It is believed that they spent longer in captivity than any other victims of Somali piracy.

The four were among 24 crew members seized in April 2010 after pirates hijacked the Taiwan-flagged fishing vessel FV Prantalay 12.

The MASSOB leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, who spoke through the organisation’s Information Coordinator for Onitsha, Mr. Charles Igbokwe, said the new Biafran vehicles, drivers’ licence and new currency were launched yesterday, in a colourful ceremony in Owerri, Imo State capital.

A man arrested for allegedly attempting to rape his daughter in Ajeromi, Ifelodun local government area of Lagos State, has told the police that he wanted to test her virginity.

Leadership reports that the suspect, identified simply as Alex, was said to have attempted to rape his 15-year- old daughter, Agnes (not real name), in his apartment at Abiodun street, Ajegunle.

Gary Glitter jailed for 16 years

Former singer Gary Glitter has been jailed for a total of 16 years for sexually abusing three young girls between 1975 and 1980.

Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was sentenced for attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault and one of having sex with a girl under 13.
