The Naira, at the Interbank market, on Thursday gained 80 kobo to the dollar, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says.<br /><br />The apex bank, in a statement in Lagos, said that the Naira closed at N185.50 from the N186.30 recorded on Wednesday.<br /><br />The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the appreciation may be due to regular intervention at the interbank and foreign exchange markets by CBN.<br /><br />One of such measures included review upward of the Net Open Positions (NOP) of commercial banks’ shareholders’ fund from 0.1 per cent to 0.5 per cent.<br /><br />The upward review is to increase liquidity at the interbank and foreign exchange markets.<br /><br />The Naira had experienced a downward trend due to the drop in oil prices at the international market.<br /><br />Photo Credit: Dreamstime.com<br />

A forensic audit on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) was recently conducted by PriceWaterHouseCoopers.<br /><br />You will recall that President Goodluck Jonathan received the audit report on Monday and assured Nigerians that there was no cause for alarm.<br /><br />However, some highlights of the report have now been revealed, including the fact that NNPC and Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) are to refund the sum of N274.54 billion ($1.48 billion) to the federation account.<br /><br />Auditor-General for the federation, Samuel Ukura, announced the news in Abuja on Thursday, Punch reports.<br /><br />According to reports, “PriceWaterHouseCoopers was last year hired by the Federal Government to carry out the forensic audit of the NNPC following an allegation by the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi, that $49 billion was not remitted to the Federation Account by the corporation.”

You dont have to go to work today!<br /><br />Get off the internet and go get your PVC so that you can vote in the forth coming elections...<br /><br />The Lagos State Government Thursday declared Friday a work-free day for its workers just as the State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola SAN, enjoined<br />private Sector employers to release their workers early to enable those of them who are yet to collect their Permanent Voter’s Card to do so in their various Polling Units.<br /><br />The Head of Service, Mrs. Oluseyi Williams, who gave the directive in a statement, said the State Government was desirous of ensuring that all public servants in the State participated in the voting process adding that they should take the opportunity to go out and collect their cards at their Polling Units.<br /><br />He declared, “The prosperity and the brighter rewarding future that we all seek, for ourselves and our children over the next four years, will be determined by what we do in the next few days”, adding that no sacrifice could be too much a price to secure a better future over the next four years and beyond.<br /><br />The Governor, who noted that in order for democracy to be truly representative, it must be participatory, added that such participation confers eligibility and imposes a duty on all the citizens from the age of 18 years to vote in the elections even as it also enables them to have a say in the elections.<br /><br />Oyo and Yobe States declared a two-day public holiday, Thursday, February 5 and Friday, 6, to allow residents collect their PVCs.<br /><br />Other states who have declared holidays for PVC collection include Niger, Imo and Edo.<br /><br />The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for collection to Sunday, February 8.<br /><br />Also Kano State Government has declared Friday, Feb. 6 public holiday to allow civil servants who have not collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to do so.<br /><br />This is contained in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer in the office of the state Head of Service, Alhaji Mustapha Fagge, and issued to newsmen in Kano on Thursday.<br /><br />According to the statement, the public holiday is necessary to enable civil servants use the opportunity to obtain their PVCs at INEC designation centres.<br /><br />The statement urged civil servants to ensure that they visited the distribution centres to collect their PVCs.<br /><br />(NAN).<br />

 by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency after her friend who 
promised to take her to Dubai, the United Arab Emirate planted a drug, 
Cannabis Sativa in one of her luggage.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The lady, Obidike Ugochukwu Maureen, said she never knew her friend, Ebere Ohakwe Sandra, could set her up.<br /><br />Maureen said: “My friend did not tell me she had drugs in the luggage she checked in on my name.<br />“She told me that it was all foodstuffs but it turned out to be cannabis.<br />“I feel very sad.”<br /><br />Sandra on the other hand confessed that she wanted to take the parcel of drugs out of Nigeria for her travelling agent who promised to give her free visa.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> The drug, weighing 19.8kg, were about to be exported to Dubai, United Arab Emirate when the ladies were arrested.<br /><br />The arrest took place at the departure hall of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos during the screening of passengers on an Etihad flight to Dubai.<br /><br />The drug was concealed in foodstuff and local alcoholic beverage called Alomo Bitters.<br /><br />The NDLEA commander at the Lagos Airport, Hamza Umar, while confirming the arrest, said that the case was under investigation.<br /><br />Umar however added that 78 parcels of dried weed were discovered in the luggage of Maureen.<br /><br />Sandra, who lives and sells foodstuff in Dubai, said her travel agent told her to smuggle cannabis in exchange for her visa.<br /><br />Sandra said: “I used to export foodstuff to Dubai since 2012.<br /><br />“Each time I go to Dubai, I stay for two months and come back because I have no permanent visa.<br /><br />“I came to Nigeria since December 2014 to spend the Christmas and New Year at home.<br />“While I was preparing to go back, my travel agent in Dubai called me that somebody will give me a parcel to take to him.<br />“My first question was that I hope it is not cocaine.<br />And he said that it was not cocaine but weed and that it was not something serious.<br /><br />“He also promised me that if I could take it to him, he would prepare my next visa for free.<br />“I agreed to take it.”<br /><br />Sandra, a 2010 graduate of Economics of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, also confessed that she implicated her friend.<br /><br />Her words: “Maureen is my friend, We met in Port Harcourt and had been chatting always.<br />“She told me she would like to visit Dubai to buy clothes because she sells female clothes.<br />“We concluded that we would both travel to Dubai when I’m returning in January 2015.<br />“Since she had only hand luggage, I decided to check in some of my luggage in her name because I had 80kg and did not want to pay the excess charge.<br />“Unfortunately, NDLEA discovered drugs in the luggage I checked in her name and we were both arrested.<br /><br />“I regret accepting to take the drug.”<br /><br />The NDLEA Chairman, Mr. Ahmadu Giade, called on travellers to be sure of the content of their luggage before travelling.<br /><br />“Members of the public must take necessary preventive measures to ensure that they have no drugs in their luggage. They must also not collect luggage from people when travelling. The remains of Stephen Aloefuna, a former footballer with Rangers International Football Club in the 1980s was recently discovered in his family home in Amikwo Village in Awka South LGA after passing away about 2 years ago from mental illness.<br /><br />According to Sunnewsonline, the sister of the late footballer, Miss Ngozi Aloefuna (pictured above), who is a popular food vendor at Eke-Awka market in Anambra, had kept the remains of her late younger brother in the family home after no family member wanted to be involved in his burial rites.<br /><br /><br />The remains of the late footballer was discovered after one of his brothers, Ifeanyi, returned home and demanded to be shown where his late brother was buried. Ngozi then took him to the room within the family compound where late Stephen passed away two years ago, his body already decomposed and turned into a skeleton. When interrogated, Miss Aloefuna said she had nothing sinister to do with her late brother's corpse, stating that she had been the one taking care of him since he came down with mental illness and finally died. Many believed she used his body part for her food business.<br /><br />    "I am innocent. I did not kill my brother. Everybody knew he had a mental problem and was seriously sick before he died. Before he died, I was the only person that was taking care of him for years and nobody asked me how he was faring until he died. They said I killed him and used his body to prepare the food that I sell but only God knows the truth. I leave it for God to judge. I decided to cover him till he, one of our brothers, comes back because only I cannot bury him. After two years of his death, some of our family members came and asked of him and I told them he is dead and they said I should show them his grave. I opened his room and showed them where he died. Then I was arrested and taken to the police station" she said<br />

Megamouth sharks troll the deep sea for the smallest bits of food, plankton and krill, trapping them in the massive caves that are their jaws. They are mysterious and extraordinarily rare -- and almost never seen by humans.<br /><br />But on the morning of the 28th of January, last week Wednesday, a 15-foot adult male megamouth washed up on the shores of Barangay Marigondon in the Philippines. And according to reports, the shark was dead when fishermen discovered it. It had been trapped in one of the fishermen's nets. After contacting local authorities, it was confirmed to be the ever elusive megamouth shark, Megachasma pelagios.<br /><br />With only 64 previous sightings of this type of shark ever recorded, its discovery was thrilling. The shark's cause of death has yet to be determined but it is believed its body will likely go on display at Albay Parks and Wildlife Centre in the Philippines. See more pics after the cut.<br />

beckoned on Professor Longe to come and present gifts of iPhone 6, to some
lucky students. However, Professor Longe never knew he was in for the surprise
of a life time, as his name was later announced as the beneficiary of the star
surprise of the day, a brand new, Year 2014 KIA car.</span></span></div>

A gang in the Ketu area of Lagos State has tortured to death a 
68-year-old man, Nasirudeen Ajawesola, for allegedly hitting a resident 
of the area with a fetish ring.<br />

It was gathered that the resident, who could not be identified as of 
press time, subsequently fell unconscious. The incident happened on 
Osokoya Street, Ketu.The police were, however, able to apprehend a 
member of the group, Abiola Ogunmola, who was the elder brother of the 
resident.<br />

When Ajawesola arrived at the scene, an argument was said to have started, which led to a fight.<br />

In the ensuing confusion, Ajawesola allegedly slapped the brother of the suspect with a fetish ring.<br />

The victim was said to have fallen down and became unconscious. <br />
