Gunmen on Friday shot at the vehicles of the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Sam Ortom, at the funeral ceremony of the lecturer of Benue State University (BSU), Dr Samson Sambe, in Adikpo, headquarters of Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State.
Saturday Tribune gathered that Dr Ortom was giving funeral oration when sudden sporadic gunshots left mourners scampering for safety.
It was gathered that the window of the branded Ford Hillux van was shattered as the bullet pierced through the roof the car.
Another branded Pick-up vehicle was hit at the tail board and the bullet went through, came out by the left side and hit a journalist’s car parked close by.
Ortom’s media aide, Mr Tahav Argezua, speaking on the incident, stated that despite the attack, his principal still went ahead to conclude his oration.
Elder brother of the deceased and Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr Asen Sambe, had to appeal for calm as the funeral was hurriedly concluded.
The former Minister of State, Industry, Trade, and Investment, however, proceeded to the Adikpo police station where he lodged a complaint on the incident.
Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state command, ASP Austin Ezeani, confirmed the attack to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Makurdi.
Ezeani said the vehicles, a Ford and Toyota Hilux with another utility vehicle, received several shots, adding that all the vehicles were parked near the Adikpo Magistrate’s Court along the ACC School. He said that the police were yet to establish the motive of the attack but had begun investigations into the matter.
