Xabi Alonso was sent off as Bayern Munich failed to break down Shakhtar Donetsk in a goalless draw in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash.
A yellow card for bad fouls in each half led to Alonso's 65th-minute dismissal, which encouraged Shakhtar to push forward in search of a winner which did not come.
Bayern controlled more than 70 percent of possession while at full strength, and while the red card helped even the contest, the hosts were held to just one shot from long distance in the first half.
Rafinha's first-minute strike was the only effort that Bayern could put on target.
Alonso was dismissed in his 100th Champions League game.
The match was played in Lviv, more than 1,200 kilometres from Shakhtar's home stadium, which was damaged by shelling in October.
