JOHANNESBURG – Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has told students at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) that his party is working to ensure free higher education becomes a reality in South Africa.

Malema was addressing an EFF rally at the VUT campus in Vanderbijlpark in the lead up to the institutions Student Representative Council (SRC) elections on Wednesday.

The red beret leader has accused government of failing to protect the rights of young South Africans to access education.

Following several protests by VUT students over funding shortages, the EFF leader has promised there will be a change in South Africa’s higher education system.

Malema says poor students are being disadvantaged further by funding shortages from the National Students Financial Aid Scheme.

“Education is not a commodity, education is a birth right.”

Today VUT students are expected to cast their votes for their new SRC.
