Former paralympian Oscar Pistorius’s lawyers will on Friday appeal the court’s decision to allow the State to appeal his culpable homicide conviction. The state wants Pistorius to be convicted of the more serious charge of murder for shooting dead his girlfriend, model and law graduate, Reeva Steenkamp.

Judge Thokozile Masipa granted the State’s application to appeal the conviction, but dismissed its application to appeal his five-year jail sentence.

Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide in September last year.

On Valentine’s Day 2013, Pistorius shot four times through his bathroom door, killing Steenkamp. He allegedly thought he was shooting an intruder.
