A joint team of Police and vigilance group on Monday killed four gunmen, who attacked Tafawa Balewa town, in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Bauchi State Command, Haruna Mohammed, in a statement made available to newsmen in Bauchi, indicated that the gunmen stormed the town in a convoy of 18 Hilux vans  and started shooting sporadically into the air.


He said, “On the 30/3/2015 (Monday) at about 07.30hrs (7.30am), unknown gunmen stormed Tafawa Balewa town in a convoy of  18 Hilux vehicles and started firing sporadically in different directions.

“Joint police and local vigilance group in the town, who got wind of the approaching hoodlums, engaged them into a fierce gun battle, forcing them to abandon four Hilux vehicles, mounted with anti aircraft machine guns and retreated towards Bununu after sustaining heavy casualties.”

The Police spokesman added that “rampaging youths in the town, numbering over 3,000, burnt down four corpses of the attackers and recovered the Hilux vehicles.”

He added that two empty shells of 12.7mm ammunition of AA were also recovered at the scene.

Mohammed said the attackers killed three vigilance group members in Jitar village in Bauchi Local Government Area of the state.

“Meanwhile, the same hoodlums went back to Jitar village in Bauchi LGA and killed three vigilance group members namely Musa Maidoya, Inuwa Musa and Bature Abdullahi, all males and 40 years of Jitar village,” the PPRO said.

According to him, Police detectives attached to Township Division visited the scene and evacuated the victims to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching hospital, Bauchi for medical and postmortem.
