A 21-year-old man was shot dead by a soldier at the Ali Kazaure polling unit in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State on Saturday.
Our correspondent gathered that the man, identified as Salim Nasir, who was supporting one of the political parties, was shot dead by the soldier after he engaged a supporter of another party in a scuffle.
It was gathered that Nasir, in the course of the scuffle, drew a knife against his opponent, but as a soldier tried to take the weapon from him, he was said to have struggled with him.
It was learnt that one of the soldiers at the polling unit, fired at him.
The incident nearly marred voting at the Sarkin Arab ward, but the timely intervention of other security agents saved the situation.
The man, who was thought to be injured, was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he died.
STF spokesman, Capt. Ikedichi Iweha, who confirmed the incident, described it as unfortunate.
He said that the man engaged the soldiers in a fight when they tried to intervene and prevent him from stabbing his opponent.
He advised the public to always cooperate with security men and allowed them to do their job.
Iweha commiserated with the family of the deceased.
