A baby girl has been found alive inside a partially-submerged car wreck beside her dead mother 13 hours after the vehicle crashed into a river in the US state of Utah.

A fisherman discovered the car, floating upside down in the freezing waters, shortly after noon on Saturday, FOX News reports.

Police believe the car hit a cement barrier on a bridge the night before and ended up in the Spanish Fork river.

The 18-month-old girl was found locked in a car seat in the rear passenger seat, police said.

Her 25-year-old mother was dead in the driver's seat by the time medics reached them. She had been driving home from visiting her parents at the time of the crash.

The infant was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Salt Lake City in a critical condition.

The names of the victims have not been released.
