President Goodluck Jonathan has assigned portfolios to the eight ministerial nominees that were recently screened and cleared by the Nigerian Senate.

Jonathan, on Wednesday, before the commencement of the weekly Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting, inaugurated and then gave portfolios to the eight new ministers.


Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, whose confirmation caused a media frenzy, was made the new Minister of State for Foreign Affairs II, while Prof. Nicholas Ada was assigned the office of the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs I.

Retired Colonel Augustine Akobundu was made the Minister of State for Defense; Mr. Fidelius Nwankwo was assigned the portfolio of Minister of State for Health; Mrs Hauwa Bappa was made the Minister of State for Niger Delta; while Mr. Kenneth Kobani was assigned Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investments.

Federal Ministries’ portfolios were assigned to Senator Patricia Akwashiki, who was made Minister of Information and Senator Joel Ikeya was made the Minister of Labour and Productivity.

The President also made the Minister of State for Health, Khaliru Alhassan, who has been acting as Supervising Minister of Health since Prof. Onyebuchi Ckukwu’s resignation in 2014, the new Minister of Health.
