PLAYERS of Nigeria Premier League champions Kano Pillars were attacked on Thursday at Abaji on the outskirts of Abuja.
They were on their way to Owerri, the Imo State capital, for this weekend’s opener of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), match against Heartland FC of Owerri.
One of the victims, Isaac Loute, revealed to Tribunesport that five players were hit by stray bullets.
The players are currently in a Lokoja hospital receiving treatment. The 2014/15 Nigeria Professional Football League season begins this weekend.
Reacting, Pillars’ head of CAF Continental Committee, Mike Idoko said the incident was quite unfortunate.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the team, Babangida Umar, on his way to visit the players in the hospital, said he would not trade blame for the unfortunate incident but would await the doctor’s report to ascertain the degree of injuries sustained by the players.
Also, General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Musa Amadu said it was a very sad thing to happen to Nigeria football.
