Security agencies in the country are allegedly investigating into the identities of Nigerians, who might have joined the militant terrorist group, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, ISIS, the Punch reports.
According to the report, the security agencies decided to carry out the investigation as a direct fallout of reports that a son of a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mohammed Uwais, had allegedly joined the militant group.
The report quotes a top security source in Abuja as saying that: “Besides Uwais’ son, we are trailing more Nigerians, who recently travelled to the Middle East. I cannot give you details for now. What I can say is that the militant group is recruiting Nigerians.”
It was also gathered that the Department of State Services, DSS, had declared a manhunt for the son of Uwais.
According to the report, the younger Uwais was said to have gotten a Turkish visa in Abuja and traveled to Syria through Turkey with the aim of linking up with the Islamic militants who are waging a murderous war in Iraq and part of Syria.
According to security sources quoted by the report, the leadership of DSS had briefed the state directorates of the agency and the field operatives to be on the look-out for the suspect and other Nigerians that may want to head for Syria to join ISIS terrorists.
Continuing, the source said that all DSS personnel had been briefed on the adventure of Uwais’s son, who allegedly travelled to Turkey without telling his parents and other relatives.
“DSS operatives have been directed to be on the look-out for the suspect because it has not been established whether the man and his family are in Syria or not, but security agencies are not relenting in their efforts to ascertain the location of the suspect and everything is being done to prevent others from joining the militants,” he stated.
