The 39-year-old professional golfer's split with his girlfriend of three years -- 30-year-old professional skier Lindsay Vonn -- on the anniversary of his father and mentor Earl Woods' death in 2006 has definitely taken a toll on him as he prepares to get back into the PGA tour following a disappointing 17th place finish at the Masters in April.
Fighting back tears, Woods told reporters in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. that this has been a tough few days as the Player's Championships are set to begin Thursday, and that he hasn't been able to sleep.
"Obviously it does affect me. It is tough. There’s no doubt," admitted Woods. "And on top of that, this time of year is really, really hard on me. This three-day window is really hard. I haven't slept. These three days, May 3rd and through the 5th, today, is just brutal on me, and then with obviously what happened on Sunday, it just adds to it."
Vonn initially broke news of their mutual split on Facebook.
"After nearly three years together, Tiger and I have mutually decided to end our relationship," Vonn wrote. "I will always cherish the memories that we've created together. Unfortunately, we both lead incredibly hectic lives that force us to spend a majority of our time apart."
Woods left a similar message on his website.
"Lindsey and I have mutually decided to stop dating," he wrote. "I have great admiration, respect and love for Lindsey and I'll always cherish our time together. … Unfortunately, we lead very hectic lives and are both competing in demanding sports. It's difficult to spend time together."
We hope Woods gets through this tough time and feels better soon.
